South Australia - Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy

Your welcome from Stuart Highway.

The Big Winch and some abandoned big machinery (lower case). There is a lot of older opal mining equipment scattered and rusting around town.

Coober Pedy was basically built underground due to the scorching outback summers. It's not just a gimmick that my hotel has all underground passageways and rooms. It's practicality and it's done throughout the town. Also, you may get some opals out of the rock as you clear out the space.

A left-right panorama from the Big Winch scenic lookout. At the far right, the landscape is not natural. All those mounds are dirt piles upheaved in the search for opals.
