South Australia - Stuart Highway - N. of Coober Pedy

Stuart Highway, Highway A87
North of Coober Pedy

All photos were taken heading south.

The last two photos are a left-right pair.

All of this weird mound business is on the left. Let's see what's on the right.

Nice. Back to the left again.

The road shifted, so now there's a mound on straight ahead and a mound on the right.

To my left, looking lefter and less left.

The last photo is about 20 kilometres north of Marla.

Jumping substantially, I'm now only 20 minutes (1st photo) to 15 minutes from Coober Pedy. These and the remaining photos on this page are waste mounds from opal mining, though you still have a little geology in the 2nd photo (and in the 3rd-4th photos in the next run that look that way).

Took me long enough, but I finally found some equipment to prove that some of these are active mounds.

Oh, look, there are mounds to my right now also. Most of them seem to be east of the highway, but opals know no borders.

Um, are you sure you want these so close to the road?

A pair of photos to my right bracket a pair to my left.

After editing all of these photos, I'm convinced that there are opals between the mine shafts too, just waiting to be carefully extracted without running, falling, or walking backward down a shaft.
