Babinda

Heading west from Babinda on The Boulders Road, these photos look to my right at the foothills of Mount Bellenden Ker.

And these photos look to my left at the tallest mountain in Queensland, Mount Bartle Frere (over 1,600 metres), and its foothills.

I've arrived at Babinda Creek, in search of the Babinda Boulders. So far, I've got a bunch of rocks.

And a butterfly.

The surprisingly vibrant, surprisingly angry brush turkey wants to know what you are looking at.

Ah, those look like boulders. This is traditionally known as Devil's Pools, the site where Oolana legendarily drowned herself in a Romeo-and-Juliet type scenario. She fled arranged marriage in her Yindinji tribe (those are indeed actual people) with Dyga, but they were caught. He was taken away, she escaped, and despondent, threw herself into Devil's Pools. Her tears are the currents that flow through the boulders. (Or it's millennia of erosion.)

Some of the more interesting rock formations to be found.

Heading back to Babinda from its Boulders, the 1st and 3rd photos look to my left and the others look to my right.
