O̅amaru - Thames Street north of Steward Street

The North Otago monument to the Boer, or South African, War is at the north end of Thames Street at Highway 1. New Zealand was a Crown colony at the time and therefore was compelled to contribute soldiers to the imperialist cause.

The most I know is this is "the old Polytechnic school", on the left (east) as I head south. Nothing says what school, and for some reason it's not a registered heritage site.

The 1882 Waitaki County Council Chambers are next on the west.

Perhaps the centerpiece of Thames Street's rich architectural trove is the 1906 Town Hall and Opera House, which was renovated and still houses opera, next to the Council Chambers.

Meanwhile, on the east, the 1881 Queen's Hotel.

Back to the west for the 1883 O̅amaru Courthouse.

Unregistered old buildings on the east side.

Also unregistered, but on the west.

Just south (left) of those two buildings.

Finally, back to the east side for the 1882 Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute.
