All photos were taken heading south.


Leaving Fox Glacier, I spy, with my little eye, Mt. Myers.


In the first photo, I can kinda make out a misty peak along the Karangarua River. It's in the Karangarua Range (which is where karangaroos come from), and it's called... Misty Peak. Imaginative.


At the Makawhio (Jacobs) River, looking left (southeast) at Mt. Ritchie.


Coastal glimpses are fewer and farther between. This is Heretaniwha Point.

In between those pairs, I cross the Mahitahi River (where they feed mai tais to mahi-mahi) and peep the top of Mt. Baird.


Second photo looks south along the Paringa River.


Lake Moeraki is on my left.


Another brief glimpse of coastline, approaching Adiantum Bluff. The Haast Highway has had quite a few landslides over the years since it's nestled up against the bluffs, resulting in the road being rerouted around them instead of digging it out.


The Haast Highway turns inland along the Haast River on its way to Haast Pass, so you can imagine we'll be seeing this river for awhile. The last three photos form a left-right triptych.


Continuing inland, I catch my first glimpses of Macfarlane Ridge, one of the taller spurs from the main Southern Alps ridge.

I hope you enjoyed that one mountain. The last photo introduces the Bealey Range with, from left to right, Mt. Marshman, Shingle Top, Mt. Awkward (would have been fine if they didn't name it that), and Mt. Bull. You'll see more of those as you continue toward Haast Pass via the link just below.
