New Zealand - NZ 6 - Queenstown-Lakes Dist. - Lake Hayes-Central Otago

Highway 6, Queenstown-Lakes District -
Lake Hayes to Central Otago District

All photos were taken heading west.

The Kawarau River forms the boundary between Queenstown-Lakes and Central Otago Districts where Highway 6 happens to cross it. Here. We'll be crossing it again later sans boundary.

Never in all of my New Zealand pages has the word "panorama" been less misused.

Ahead, right, less right.

Right, more right, and then Quartz Knoll - also right. All the good stuff is to the right.

The last photo looks back behind me... to the right. It shows Mt. Michael and the tail end of the Pisa Range.

Just kidding, there's cool stuff to the left as well (at least starting now). This mountain range is simply known as the Remarkables, rising over 2000 meters by Lake Wakatipu. They may look more remarkable from there. Photos then look progressively more left until I'm turned around.

Right, left, less left. Remarkable.

All to the right. The first three photos form a quasi-panorama, and then the last photo is a recap.

Ahead left, actual left.

Right, less right.

Looking to my right as I recross the Kawarau River, I only now (years after taking the photo) realize that I'm at the original 1880 crossing, which was the site of the first commercial bungy jumping operation. (In America, we would write "bungee".)

The first two photos are a left/right pair of the Remarkables to the left. The third photo may be Crown Peak in the Crown Range, since it faces to the right.

The original Queenstown Trail, still to my right, crosses Swift Burn. It was blazed by gold miners.

Coronet Peak is to my left in the first and last photos. Crown Terrace (the bottom of Crown Range) is to my right.

Brow Peak is briefly visible to the right of Coronet Peak.

To the south past Arrow Junction, Ben Cruachan.

Remarkables to the left of me, Morven Hill straight ahead, here I am stuck in the middle of New Zealand with you.
