New South Wales - Sydney - George St.

Sydney - George Street

Photos were taken heading north.

Starting at Liverpool Street, this is the 1904 Bank of Australasia Southern Branch, now a pub.

The 1919 John Young hotel is on the southwest corner of the same intersection.

The 1930 Plaza Theatre, with hidden faces. At least it has a use, though no longer a theatre.

Quickly on the left, St. Andrew's Cathedral.

Gradually on the left, the 1889 Town Hall. Sydney's not a town anymore.

Dudley House (1923) and a nondescript building I can't trace, but with a cool architectural treatment.

The 1926 Nock & Kirby Building is on the left, and the 1930 Farmer & Co. Department Store is on the right.

This building started life as the Crystal Hotel in 1902, ultimately becoming the Tatler Hotel before being refurbished for commerce as the loading area for the giant Westfield Shopping Centre.

This building doesn't make me tell you about it!

This one doesn't, so I'll tell you it was the Ashdown & Company building in 1864, now the Darrell Lea Building, and has been chopped back to just this corner.

Just a taste of the 1925 Commercial Banking Company of Sydney, Ltd. building. I've cropped out the post office on the right so that you visit that page separately - see big link at bottom.

#354 George Street, on the corner of Martin Place, was the 1902 Bank of Australasia. See, the one atop the page was the Southern Branch, so this is different.

The 1894-1895 Equitable Building, for the Equitable Life and General Insurance Co., is just behind the bank.

The 1910 Metropolitan Hotel is the third such-named hotel at this site, making the site more historic than the building. It's still got some cool touches.

The rival Brooklyn Hotel (1912) was catty-corner from the Metropolitan, on the northwest corner of Bridge Street. It remains a hotel, but not with the same name.

Ending on a different note, First Fleet Park is on the east side of George St. just north of the Cahill Expressway overpass. The Rocks neighborhood (see big link below) is on the west side.
