New Mexico - US 66/NM SR 124

State Route 124 (former US 66) scenery

On the north edge of El Malpais, one of many lava fields in the state. You may have seen a similar field with a similar name (Carrizozo Malpais) on my US 380 scenery page.

Continuing through the lava on the south side of the road. Most of El Malpais, including the National Monument, is to the south.

Similar-looking rock in a different color on the north side of the road.

Different views of the southeastern formations you saw before, now clear of the lava field.

And another view of the northeastern formation you saw before.

The formations start to close in on the road.

Looking north across Interstate 40, which parallels State Route 124, which makes sense because I-40 replaced US 66, and old US 66 became State Route 124. Got all that? If so, you can take a crack at deciphering my roads pages.

To the south, I affectionately call this formation Mount Butterpat. It looks like cafeteria mashed potatoes on a lunch tray landscape.

Views to the north.

Say goodbye to the butter! (Note the coincidence of moo-cows in front.)

More northern to northeastern scenery.

Giving the north side a break, here's a bunch to the south-southeast.

Back to the north.

The last photos taken easterly, at New Laguna.

Two matched left-right pairs of northerly photos.
