Kansas - Hutchinson

Hutchinson

Hutchinson's history with salt goes back to 1887. The vast underground deposits left by a former ocean were primarily mined by pumping in water, dissolving the salt, then drawing it out and evaporating the brine. Salt underlies the area from 400 to 800 feet deep, and therefore also holds it up (so it can't all be mined away). Check out the salt museum link at bottom for more.

The fairgrounds are on the north side of the city. Among the notable buildings include the aging Bison Arena and the Depression-era 4-H Encampment Building.
