Hawai`i - `Iao Valley
`Iao Valley and `Iao Needle

Heading west on HI Route 320 through the majesty of Mauna Kahalawai's ancient ridges.

The end of the road in `Iao Valley. The Needle doesn't look particularly fascinating - in fact, it resembles many of your favorite anatomical parts - but it's a unique formation that should have completely eroded away by now.

Panning from south to north.

Could this tiny stream be responsible for the wide valley?

I wasn't setting up this photo, no, of course not. But actually, the stream has nothing to do with the valley, which was a consequence of the patterns of volcanic actions over eons.
