California - San Diego - Old Town - Outside State Park

Old Town San Diego outside the State Historic Park

The Mormon Battalion, on the north side of Juan Street, home to the only religiously based military unit in U.S. history. It fought in the Mexican-American War shortly after the advent of Mormonism and helped protect California from Mexican reconquest.

Temple Beth Israel, the second oldest synagogue in the West. It's also not part of Old Town, having been moved there from downtown to save it from encroaching development.

From the rear of the temple, I enter historic Heritage Park, a separate park run by San Diego County. In fact, all of Heritage Park consists of houses moved from other parts of the city, which is why it's not technically part of Old Town (although immediately adjacent). This is the first house to the east, Burton House.

McConaughy House is at the end of Heritage Park Row.

Coming back along the north side of the road, this is Christian House.

Continuing west, Bushyhead House and Sherman Gilbert House.

This coral tree grows at the edge of Heritage Park.

Down to the beginning of San Diego Avenue, the Church of the Immaculate Conception takes up most of the north side of the block between Twiggs and Harney Streets. Junipero Serra Hall is right next door, taking up the rest.

On the south side of that block. The plaques seem to have nothing to do with the house on which they're posted.

Whaley House, now east of Harney Street on San Diego Avenue.

The Old Adobe Chapel is two blocks east of the Immaculate Conception church to which it belongs.
