201 was one of three routes predating the 5xx system along with 200 and 203. It was created in 1936 and probably officially died in 1952 upon creation of the 5xx system, although topo maps show it into the 1960s.

201 ended along Linwood Ave. (now Bergen CR 110) at what is now CR 507 in Ridgewood.

201 ended along what is now CR 502 at US 9W/historic NJ 1 in Alpine.
