New Jersey Roads - New Rd. - Future US 1-9T
New Road, future US 1-9 Truck
Photos were taken in November 2022, when the road itself was fully constructed from County Rd. (CR 653) to Secaucus Rd. (CR 678) but adjacent work continued.

Looking north from County Road, the little pavement pluses are for delineators to be etched into the road, striping to start or end (the dashed line coming in the second photo), etc. Curb and drainage are set on both sides.

Looking to the left, this island will separate SB right turns from other traffic. The pedestrian crossing is already cut through the intersection.

Southbound approaching the intersection, making it clear how the island will function. The only thing preventing through traffic from using it in 2022 - or in 2025 as this page is written - are the barriers at CR 653.

A couple of other things I want to touch on before I give you the run of the road, both looking south. The first photo shows that the existing USPS driveway was shifted west to make room for New Road, resulting in a major parking lot redesign to maintain their facility. (Not to mention all the utility and drainage impacts that are part of civil engineering design.) I didn't want to intrude into US government property, so you get this view instead. The second photo shows an example of "adjacent work" not yet completed. The (2021 stamp) bridge has holes in the concrete to attach a guide rail, which is required to protect the bridge from a blunt vehicle impact. It would go in front of the light pole and then end somewhere upstream as determined in design.

Continuing north from there, one thing to point out is that the bridge just before Secaucus Rd. is a little narrower than the rest of the road - actually 48' instead of 54'. Whether for cost cutting, wetlands impacts, or other, it means that if New Road is widened to 4 lanes in the future (say, if they're ever able to fulfill my fantasy and get this up to NJ 3), decisions will have to be made here.

While we're up here, let's take a look at the north end of the USPS facility. The Secaucus Rd. driveway comes south in a long S curve and intersects this former paved area that appears to lead right into it. Well, before construction started, the USPS driveway followed this very pavement north under Secaucus Rd. and then curved around onto Grand St. But New Road is now using Grand St. for its own connection, so to maintain a separate USPS driveway it was rerouted to the far side of the Grand St./CR 678 intersection, resulting in this piece becoming abandoned (and eventually torn to dirt). Fun fact: One of the design alternatives would have brought USPS traffic directly out to New Road instead of this reroute.

Heading back out of the USPS facility, with the old driveway straight ahead and the upgrades to Grand St. visible behind the gate.

And back south on New Road to complete the journey. The median rumble strip looks just a tad wavy, but I'm sure that will get fixed. Or just stay on your side and don't cross it.
