Maryland Roads/Non-Roads - Whitehaven (Ferry)

Whitehaven Ferry and Whitehaven

In other words, don't ford the river. I'm facing north toward Whitehaven. The sign for maximum vehicle loading is mounted on the ferry.

This is a rare cable ferry, necessary due to the strong current of the Wicomico River. As you can see, the ferry spends most of its time downstream from either end of the road, and has to pull itself back in on either side. Should the cable ever snap, your car will enjoy a ride into Chesapeake Bay.

Where I just came from, Whitehaven Ferry Rd. in Somerset County. I'm heading to Wicomico County.

The first building upon my arrival in Whitehaven appears to have been an old inn, or quite possibly a plantation.

Other buildings of intrigue in the town.
