California Roads - US 101 NB - Hollywood Fwy.

US 101 northbound, Hollywood Freeway

The last two photos are left and right on the same gantry. In the first photo you see Los Angeles' 1970s experiment with exit numbers, which every other state was fine with at the time but California didn't seem to grasp. It's still Exit 1A, and the next one (First) is Exit 1B NB but 1C SB.

Again, the last two photos are left and right on the same bridge. Again, you see original exit numbers.

CA 2 joins for a short spell and disappears again.

Identical signs on Western Ave. NB, before (right side) and after (left side) crossing US 101.

Two pairs of left-right signs, the first two mounted on a 1949 overpass. L.A. was doing freeways before it was cool.

The last photo is the onramp from Cahuenga Blvd. at Exit 9C.

I wonder how old the US 101 shield was under the "North." I know how old the overpass is: 1939, the original east end of Mulholland Dr. over a number of lanes and carriageways that eventually sorted itself into the Hollywood Freeway.

The 3rd and 4th photos are left and right on the same gantry, as are the 5th and 6th photos. As are the 9th and 10th photos and the last two. Because why reduce the size of button copy? US 101 exits the Hollywood for the Ventura, giving birth to CA 170 and absorbing CA 134. (Actually, there's a small disconnected, unsigned piece of CA 170 to the south from Exit 9C. But don't tell anyone.)
