California Roads - CA 1 - Santa Cruz-Devil's Slide

CA 1, Santa Cruz to Devil's Slide

Photos are northbound unless otherwise stated.

CA 1 merges with the end of CA 17 before giving birth to CA 9. 17 is the Santa Cruz Hwy. to San Jose, by far the best way from the Bay Area to Santa Cruz. Click on each of the last two photos for closeups.

CA 1 crosses the San Lorenzo River and then the last two photos are left and right on the same gantry.

CA 1 SB turns onto Chestnut St. in Santa Cruz and heads due north for a little while as the coast runs east-west.

Leaving the city, CA 1 comes to Waddell Creek.

A bunch of non-button copy older signs and a moderately aged but damaged 1941 bridge over San Gregorio Creek.

SB, a little out of order so as not to interrupt all the NB old signs to follow.

Ending that long run of old signs with one SB.

The sign says slide area, and sure enough here we are at Devil's Slide. The tunnels under the slide area opened in 2013, replacing the alignment through the narrow cut you can see to the left.

Imagine driving through that crevice even when there isn't a rockslide. You can walk it now, but I was lame and failed you at that.

At least I got you some tunnel photos. Check out the exhaust fans on the ceiling.

One look back south at the very different northern portal.
