California Roads - CA 1 - LAX Apt. & S

LAX Airport and south

Photos are northbound unless otherwise stated.

CA 1 SB ends at this ramp. Photos are left and right sides, but one shield was replaced more recently.

CA 1 NB begins and prepares to join Coast Hwy., becoming the famous Pacific Coast Highway (PCH).

Continuing north to a wall at Myrtle St. in Laguna Beach. The "35" in the speed limits look askew.

A scenic car turns between two scenic points.

This 1 and the shield back by Laguna Beach are wide enough for 3 digits, which is absurd for a single-digit route.

Better.

Through Seal Beach to the San Gabriel River.

The marina is to the left at 2nd St. Up at 7th St. in Long Beach, there are nice old signs on top - click for closeup - and quite a bit of confusion. The bottom sign is meant for 7th St. (CA 22) WB but is far too visible to CA 1 NB traffic.

By process of elimination, the second photo is on Los Coyotes Diagonal. The other approaches were newer signs (or at least CA 1 SB, don't know if I checked CA 19).

The faded blue signs once pointed to the Convention Center along Atlantic Ave. in Long Beach. The second photo is at the top of a very tall signal pole, well above the mast arm and so tiny as to be useless.

CA 1 gets wide shields, I-710 gets narrow shields. That seems unfair.

From Magnolia Ave. up to CA 103.

A couple of SB signs.

2 NB signs and 2 SB signs in Harbor City, which Los Angeles annexed to get port access next to Long Beach.

Another faded sign leads to a railroad museum, and then I continue to Crenshaw Blvd. I don't know how anyone finds anything in SoCal.

Not the only metric distance sign along CA 1. I'm not surprised California was a leader in the metrification movement of the 1980s.

The 3rd photo is at Torrance Blvd. The 5th and 6th are in Hermosa Beach, which appreciates sign art to the point that it will leave up any overhead showing artistic patterns. Compare that to the last photo in El Segundo.

Things are off on these NB signs. Not just spacing, but also the width of the "Interstate" banner.

Much better, SB.

That's definitely not a Caltrans sign assembly despite this being a mainline state highway, as CA 1 heads under an airport runway. Notice the lack of matching down arrows and the old clearance sign.

Another airport-made sign assembly, but a Caltrans one on the exit ramp.
