The prison driveway also leads to Gateway Park along the Colorado River. In the shadow of I-8 sits the Blaisdell Slow Sand Filter Washing Machine, which looks more like a railroad car crossed with a shanty. The machine was basically a sand filter cleaner, mechanically shooting water into the sand filter to wash away impurities so that the sand could be reused for filtering drinking water.
