Iowa - Decorah Ice Caves

Decorah Ice Caves

The unique ice caves are due east of Luther College and north of the main city. I brought a flashlight but it was not powerful enough to light the pure darkness for long enough to get from the cave entrance to the icy part. Somewhere down there, there is perennial ice preserved by the surrounding karst.

Heading up the ceremonial stairs built in 1955 to the ice cave entrance. Through that narrow crevice lies the dominion of darkness and ice. If I return, I'll bring a lot more lumens.

Looking back at the cave entrance.
