Connecticut - Whale Bowl

Whale Bowl (2011 AHL Outdoor Classic)

The Whale Bowl was contested on the coldest day of 2011, February 19, where the high temperature was in the low teens. I was one of the 15,000 hardy fans to stick it out for all three contests between Army and American International, Hartford Whalers and Boston Bruins alumni, and the main event between the Connecticut Whale and Providence Bruins. This may be the only time an outdoor hockey event had colder air temperatures than ice temperature. Between periods and games, I can't speak for the women, but hundreds of men crowded into the restrooms and made sure the hand dryers were going. It was a shelter from the wind and maybe a few degrees warmer thanks to body heat.
