Tennessee

Courtesy Jason Ilyes and submitted by Adam Prince, an old state-name reassurance marker. TN 99 is a secondary route now but this shield, in the secondary shape, dates to when these were used for primary routes. 99 has been multiplexed with US 412 for some distance (but not signed) and TN 20 starts multiplexing ahead. Like TN 99, 20 loses its shields once it starts running with 412.

The former US 411 in Madisonville still has the original US 411 reassurance up, with a haphazard TO above, as well as a very original TENN 68 reassurance marker. Heck, the state primary triangles are almost all gone (secondaries still use them), let alone those with state names inside. Photo courtesy Lou Corsaro.

The quite ancient TN 34 and 78 shield assemblies are on two different Cracker Barrel restaurants in Maryland; that particular chain often ends up with various old non-highway signs in its restaurants, but I guess when these restaurants opened, they each happened to snag a particular batch that had Tennessee highway signs in them. Inspired by that, I got my hands on one of my own for TN 8. Many states used octagons or small shields with R or L in them (or even S) to indicate turns, while apparently TN went with a single rectangle.
