New Jersey Roads - Salem-Gloucester CR 617

Salem-Gloucester CR 617

All photos are northbound after the dead-end.

The dead-end is the former connection of Eldridge's Hill Rd. into NJ 45 at an angle with Swedesboro Rd. (CR 605) at another angle next to a railroad crossing. Deciding that these did not mix well, NJDOT linked 605 and 617 straight across 45 a little way north of the railroad. Straight is southwest into Woodstown.

Two bridges, four photos.

Speaking of Harrisonville, I've crossed into Gloucester County and here I am at an "all ways" stop at Ferrell Rd. CR 617 hangs a left to head north back to NJ 45, but the 45 turnpike alignment is considerably older than the state highway system, so 617 isn't an old alignment. It may have once been a shunpike, or just the old road into Harrisonville. Given that there are various other loops of roads with old-sounding names (Compromise Rd., Old Salem Rd.), CR 617 may trace part of an original path from Salem to Mullica Hill, and maybe beyond, before the turnpike was built in the 19th century.
